A BANGLADESHI man was imposed a $2,000 fine yesterday after he pleaded guilty to possession of untaxed cigarettes.

The court document stated that defendant Golam Mostafa had in his possession five cartons of cigarettes when customs officers conducted an inspection at a shophouse located in Kg Mata-Mata.

The inspection was conducted on June 16.

The 33-year-old had acquired the cigarettes from his Bangladeshi friend and the cigarettes were meant to be sold at $13 per carton.

The excise duty to be paid for the cigarettes was $250.

During the proceedings yesterday, the court ordered for the defendant to settle the fines by November.

In the meantime, Golam was ordered to be remanded as he was unable to raise the $2,000 court bail.
