THE Magistrates’ Court yesterday imposed a $7,500 fine yesterday after the defendant pleaded guilty to possession of untaxed cigarettes.

Defendant Sabtu Hj Kula, 59, was found in possession of 10 cartons and 104 packets of cigarettes when customs preventive officers conducted a raid at an address in Kg Sg Buloh on January 7, 2013.

Sabtu admitted that the cigarettes belonged to him and that he bought from Limbang and Sarawak.

The court document stated that the excise duty to be paid for the cigarettes was $1,130.

During the proceedings yesterday, the court has ordered for the defendant to pay the fines at $300 monthly or serve four months in jail for in-default of payment.
