Belait leaders distribute Kurnia dates

GRASSROOT leaders in Belait yesterday began distributing 57,000 containers of ‘Kurma Kurnia Peribadi’ to Muslim residents under their jurisdiction.

The dates, a gift from His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, were handed over to village heads and penghulus yesterday by the Belait District Office to be consumed during Ramadhan.

A total of 154 metric tonnes of dates are to be distributed in 513,333 small boxes this year, each weighing about 300 grammes. Every Muslim resident, regardless of ethnicity, nationality or age in Brunei are entitled to receive the dates, which are of the safawi variety.

During the annual distribution of dates on Tuesday, His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Malik called on grassroots leaders to take on a more proactive role in distributing the dates, especially to the destitute and senior citizens.

According to a statement from the Belait District Office, dates comprise mostly of glucose, a simple form of carbodyhrdate, utilised by the body for energy. The fruit also contains fibre and micronutrients such as iron, calcium, phosphorous, postassium and Vitamin A and C.

Prophet Muhammad (SAW) has also spoke numerously on the nutritional benefits of consuming dates through the Al-Quran.
