A MAN was imposed a $1,200 fine yesterday for possession of untaxed cigarettes.

The court document stated that Defendant Mohammad Nooralizan Awang Rosli, 29, was found in possession of four cartons of cigarettes during a routine inspection at the Kuala Lurah Control Post on May 22.

Prior to discovery of the contrabands, the defendant said that he had nothing to declare for customs.

However, a thorough inspection on the defendant’s car led the officers finding the cigarettes under the car’s seat.

The defendant later admitted that he bought the cigarettes from a man for $19.50.

He admitted the cigarettes belonged to him and it was for his own consumption. He also knew that it was an offence bringing in the cigarettes without a permit.

During the proceedings yesterday, the court ordered for the seized goods to be forfeited to the state and the defendant to pay the fines by January 2016.
