A SECONDARY school registrar from the Department of Islamic Studies was charged yesterday of misappropriating over $80,000 of zakat fitrah (tithe) payments.

Shahrul Rizam Hj Ramlee was accused of embezzling $86,344.77 when he was attached at the Zakat Fitrah Collection and Distribution Unit in Kuala Belait.

The court document submitted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Yvonne Lim stated that the misappropriation allegedly took place between July 25, 2011 and April 2, 2012.

If found guilty, he may face a jail term of up to 10 years and an unspecified amount in fines.

During the proceedings yesterday, no plea was taken from Shahrul Rizam as his Defence Counsel Ahmad Zakaria sought for a one month adjournment as he was only recently approached to represent the defendant, and the documents had yet to be furnished by the prosecution.

The case has been scheduled to be further mentioned on July 2 before Acting Senior Magistrate Hjh Ervy Sufitriana Hj Abd Rahman.

Shahrul Rizam was released on a $10,000 court bail or one local surety pending the next mention of the case.
