Quran reading victors honoured

WINNERS for the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports’ (MCYS) annual Youth Musabaqah Tilawatil Quran Reading Competition were announced yesterday during its finals held at the Dewan Digadong.

A total of eight finalists comprising of four qaris and qariahs competed for the title of champion qari and qariah.

Defending qari champion for last year’s competition, Ak Adi Nazri Pg Hj Jofri retained his title this year with a score of 89.25 per cent. Muhd Sa’dun Suhaili was crowned first runner up with less than one per cent of a difference in their scores. He earned a score of 88.75 per cent. The second runner-up with a score of 86.75 per cent was Abdul Wafiy Hj Ibrahim.

Meanwhile, first time finalist for the MCYS Youth Musabaqah Quran Reading Competition, Fatin Norhanani Hj Mohdar was crowned champion qariah. She scored 86.5 per cent for her performance. First runner-up went to Dk Ummi Syazana Pg Hj Marjuki who scored 85.25 per cent. The third place winner went to Dk Amal Zahirah Pg Hj Jofri who was last year’s champion. She scored 83.5 per cent.

Both first placers were awarded with a champion trophy, a competitor’s trophy, and a cash prize of $2,000. The first runner-up received a competitor’s trophy and a $1,500 cash prize while the second runner-up received a competitor’s trophy and a $1,000 cash prize.

Consolation prizes for fourth place winners were a competitor’s trophy and a $500 cash prize. All finalists received a certificate of participation.

MCYS Minister Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Seri Setia Hj Hazair Hj Abdullah, presented the prizes.

The chairman of the judges, Pg Hj Haslin Pg Hj Ali, said the finalists showed great potential in their performances throughout the competition, especially in the finals.

“As a result of the judges’ discussion, the finalists that have performed have displayed readings at a very good level and have showed consistency. The workshop to fine-tune their readings for two days have provided a positive impact onto the finalists in all aspects of the performances,” said the chairman.
