FOUR men who were involved in misappropriating $10,000 worth of government property are facing up to two years in jail and an unspecified amount in fines after they pleaded guilty to the offence yesterday.

The court document submitted by deputy public prosecutor Pg Norsuzanawati Pg Hj Abas stated that on April 16, 2008, a police report was filed when several items went missing from the Tasek Lama storeroom at the Department of Water Services.

The items that were stored in the room were various parts related to water works maintenance and repairs, which were properties belonging to the Brunei government.

Following investigations led to defendant Pg Harun Pg Hj Damit, 61, – a ‘Storekeeper Grade II’ responsible for the storeroom at Tasek Lama – admitting to have misappropriated various items when he took it from the store and later sold them between December 2007 and March 2008.

On several occasions Pg Harun would go with his work colleagues, co-accused Hj Ghazali Hj Metussin, 53, Ali Karim, 42, and Jeffri Omar, 43, to sell off the items and later share the sales.

The police were able to recover several of the items – 157 units of stainless steel pipes of various sizes, 49 units of check valves of various sizes, 58 units of dark tiles iron, two units of Pili Bomba (fire hydrants), 76 units of elbow CXMI of various sizes, 19 units of socket CXFI, 26 units of tee CXCXC and 25 units of CXMI coupler.

The total recovered items were valued at $10,000.

In their mitigation yesterday, the men sought for the court to impose a fine instead of the custodial sentence as they had regretted their actions.

During the proceedings yesterday, the defendants were released on a $2,000 court bail pending the sentencing on June 2.
