FIRST aiders of Brunei Gas Carriers (BGC) Sdn Bhd yesterday demonstrated their readiness to respond during BGC’s first office emergency exercise held outside its headquarters in Jerudong.

The large-scale first aid drill involved various relevant emergency response groups including the Emergency Medical Ambulance Services (EMAS), the Fire and Rescue Department and the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF).

The exercise at the Lim Kah Sik Building in Kg Jerudong comprised of a planned emergency scenario triggered by a collapsed scaffolding structure resulting in multiple injuries and two workers losing consciousness.

During the drill, appointed BGC first aiders and fire wardens responded quickly and carried out the appropriate actions in the case of a real accident.

Additional BGC staff and emergency response authority members were also on hand to observe and assess their actions respectively.

Speaking to _The Brunei Times, _BGC Quality and HSSE Manager Hj Mohd Yusof Hj Mohd Taufik said the main purpose of the first aid drill was to test the effectiveness of their HSE management system.

“First aid is just a small part of our emergency response system but it is still important as it concerns life preservation,” Hj Mohd Yusof explained.

The drill also served to test how BGC first aiders would communicate with the relevant external emergency response parties in the case of such situations, he added.

“By testing them and the system, it gives reassurance to the whole organisation that we have effective and efficient first aiders who are capable of doing (what is needed),” he further said.

Hj Mohd Yusof also said that the BGC would hold more similar first aid drills in the future.
