Responsible use of social media to be discussed

THE Sultanate will hold a two-day seminar on responsible use of social media to celebrate World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) 2015.

Brunei will join over 190 member states of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in marking WTISD today.

Today’s WTISD also coincides with the 150th anniversary of the ITU which was established on May 17, 1865 and became a United Nations specialised agency in 1947. ITU is responsible for issues that concern information and communication technologies.

The Ministry of Communications (MinCom) and the Authority for Info-Communications Technology Industry (AITI) will lead the WTISD celebration with a forum on smarter and responsible use of social media.

The forum will take place from May 20-21 with a series of seminars revolving around the theme “Telecommunications and ICTs: Drivers of innovation”.

In a statement, AITI said the theme acknowledges the contributions of telecommunications to socio-economic development and fulfillment of the ITU’s commitment “to connect the world”.

In a phone interview Hj Hadi Iskandar Dato Paduka Mohammad said that they organised a forum so there could be a vibrant and wide discussion on “how can social media be used wisely”.

The MinCom and AITI also organised a thanksgiving ceremony and mass prayer at Suri Seri Begawan Mosque in Kg Madang on May 14 as part of the celebrations to mark WTISD .

Present was the Minister of Communications Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Abdullah Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar.
