HISTORY is important for the youth to record and understand because it plays a major role in developing the nation and its people further, said the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports.

Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Seri Setia Hj Hazair Hj Abdullah, during the second Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) Trophy for the History Oratory Competition said; “History provides a significant contribution to the development of the nation, history also plays a big role to inculcate the spirit of patriotism,” he said during the finals yesterday.

“History also plays a role in the formation of the modern generation with dignity and self-esteem,” he added. The minister highlighted that the competition was for the students to present their speech based on the Sultanate’s history.

According to the ministry, the competition aims to inculcate the critical thinking culture among students from secondary level and higher education institutions.

During the finals, a total of nine finalists over 42 participants were selected to present their speech.

Mohd Yadiy Hj Mat Yassin of Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali was selected as the winner of the higher education institutions category (Category A), with his speech on Malay Muslim Monarchy. Muhd Rahimi Mohd Fadillah from Maktab Kejuruteraan Jefri Bolkiah was selected as the winner of category B (Pre-University), as well as winner of the overall competition for his speech on Al-Quran’s history of lessons to all mankind.

Muhd Ridzuan Hj Budiman from Sayyidina Hasan Secondary School was selected as the winner in the secondary school category (Category C) for his speech on the Architect of Modern Brunei.
