Forum to educate students on social issues
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN
PENGIRAN Anak Puteri Hajah Masna Secondary School yesterday organised a forum presentation for Year 7F pupils to promote awareness on social issues.
Twenty-four pupils aged between 12 and 13 from Year 7F classes were divided into six groups, each presented different topics on social issues such as drug abuse, smoking, vandalism, bullying and promiscuity.
Hjh Aisah Hj Japar, the school’s principal, said that the forum was the result of the 21st Century Teaching Learning (CTL21) workshop organised by the Department of Schools and Universiti Brunei Darussalam to MIB (Malay Muslim Monarchy) Cohort 3 teachers recently.
In her welcoming remarks, Hjh Aisah said that the CTL21-based teaching and learning would help prepare the students with learning skills and experience and become independent learners which are in line with the National Education System for the 21st Century (SPN21).
“Studies have shown that with this approach, students learn far more effectively,” she said.
“However, teachers need to be innovative, creative and committed in guiding the students to break the spoon-feeding culture,” she added.
The skills that the pupils hoped to achieve are collaboration, knowledge construction, self regulation, ICT and skilled communication, she said.
MIB teacher Yussof Hj Serudin told The Brunei Times that the forum was designed to boost the students’ confidence levels when presenting their knowledge in front of a large audience as well as broaden their knowledge on social issues.
“The pupils did their research at the school’s ICT lab under the supervision of the teachers,” he said.
