THE Ministry of Development is planning to build an interchange on the Muara-Tutong Highway near Kampung Lugu to ease traffic congestion.

Minister of Development Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Suyoi Hj Osman acknowledged that traffic could get worse as more residents move in to the new Kg Lugu National Housing Scheme.

The minister was responding to concerns recently raised by Kg Lugu residents on traffic issues.

Speaking on the sidelines of the National Family Day event at Bukit Beruang Recreational Park yesterday, YB Pehin Dato Hj Suyoi said he was aware of congestion in the area due to the increasing number of residents in the area.

Kg Lugu currently has over 900 residents, with another 1,000 cluster houses expected to be completed at the national housing scheme in about a year.

“Currently, there is congestion because of the U-turn. But we are making one interchange. Hopefully, in the next National Development Plan,” he told The Brunei Times.

“On the other side which is Jalan Tutong Lama, there is a project for an interchange – Sengkurong bypass. On both sides, we’re taking care of the Kg Lugu area. Be patient, in a couple of years, the problem will be resolved,” the minister added.

In a previous report, Mazlan Hj Mat Daud, a resident at Kg Lugu Landless Indigenous Citizens Housing Scheme, said there were two exit roads that residents could take. He said motorists using the road from Tutong towards Jerudong and Sengkurong had been experiencing queues as early as 6.30am.

Meanwhile, another Kg Lugu resident Hj Bahar Jumat suggested the government construct two U-turns close to the junction of Kg Lugu.

“Most of the residents are working in BSB and Tutong. It would be great if there’s another U-turn,” he said.
