Seminar on transborder medical practice

MORE than 80 doctors and nurses yesterday convened for the “Professional Indemnity and Transborder Medical Practice” symposium which was organised by the Brunei Medical Association (BMA) at the Badi’ah Hotel.

Following some welcoming remarks from BMA President Dr Pg Md Bahrin Pg Hj Aliuddin, Director of Legal and Corporate Affairs at Brunei Investment Agency (BIA) Ahmad Jefri Abd Rahman spoke about medical liability in the Bruneian, as well as the global contexts.

A discussion on medical liability insurance for medical professionals then ensued, courtesy of Network Country Manager of Willis Insurance Brokers (B) Sdn Bhd Ian Creighton and his colleagues.

Meanwhile, Dr Ang Swee Hui, medical superintendent at Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital, discussed the mutual recognition arrangement (MRA) for the flow of medical practitioners across ASEAN member states, in line with the ASEAN Economic Community 2015 goal.

Among the points raised by Dr Ang included the challenges of such an intended flow of medical practitioners across ASEAN, and the various requirements needed to facilitate such exchanges.
