AUTHORITIES cracked down on people flouting smoking bans at public areas, catching and fining three individuals for violations at the Kuala Belait market area over the weekend.

Eight enforcement personnel from the Kuala Belait and Seria Municipal Board and the Kuala Belait Health Department conducted an inspection under “Ops Sergah/2015”, after receiving multiple public complaints alleging that certain business license holders and shop helpers were openly smoking in the building.

The three were each issued a compound fine of $300 under Chapter 14 (2) of the Tobacco Order 2005.

A statement from the Municipal Board said that it would continue to work with other enforcement agencies to continuously monitor for illegal smoking, particularly within commercial buildings under its jurisdiction.

Non-smoking areas in 2012 were expanded to include sidewalks near business premises and the six-metre radius from any building where smoking is banned.
