THE Muslimah group of Kampung Beribi Mosque yesterday bested eight other teams to emerge as the national champion of the Al-Quran Group Reading Competition (Pertandingan Akhir Membaca Al-Quran Secara Murattal) held yesterday at the Jame’ ‘Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque.

Speaking to _The Brunei Times _after the announcement, the representative of the winning group, Hjh Salmah Hj Dullah, said it was the first time that the Muslimah group from Kg Beribi Mosque won in the competition.

Hjh Salmah said, “This is one of our contributions for the mosque and we are hoping that the younger generation, regardlesswhether male or female, would be inspired to get more trophies for the mosque.”

The group is aiming to get more people to be involved in mosque activities. “Currently, there is a lack of youth involvement at Kg Beribi Mosque. Hopefully by winning this competition, it will encourage the people in Kg Beribi to participate and contribute to the mosque,” she said.

Every competing group was comprised of five women aged between 40-70.

The national event was organised by the Ministry of Religious Affair (MoRA) through the Mosque Affair Department.

The chairman of the judges noted that the participants failed to give the best in their performances. Hjh Siti Nor Dzuhairah Hj Damit said, “Most of the groups only showed standard performances in terms of their pronunciations, melody and voices.”

Kg Birau Mosque from Tutong bagged the second place followed by the group from Rashidah Saadatul Bolkiah Mosque from Kg Sungai Akar.

The event continued with the prize presentation by the guest of honour, Datin Hjh Alimah Mohd Taib, the spouse of the Minister of Religious Affairs.
