Brunei to celebrate Earth Day 2015 with green acts
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN
BRUNEI is set to celebrate the world’s 45th anniversary of Earth Day with several parties choosing to do green acts across the country.
Earth Day is celebrated annually on April 22.
It is being observed today in Brunei with the theme, ‘It’s Our Turn to Lead”.
The Earth Day Network is looking to mobilise global leaders, businesses and citizens around the world to make meaningful commitments towards change.
It also has a goal of promoting environmental awareness, developing sustainable initiatives and galvanise every human to pledge the Earth Day Network’s ‘Acts of Green’.
Leading the sultanate’s celebration is the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRE) where they are expected to commemorate the event with a tree-planting ceremony. It is expected to take place by Sungai Berakas along the Hassanal Bolkiah Highway in Mukim Berakas A.
Last year, the department celebrated in the same nature where the Minister of Development led a tree-planting ceremony of over 400 trees at the Jalan Menteri Besar Recreational Park.
At the time, a total of 250 students from their schools’ respective eco-clubs joined in the event.
Meanwhile, non-governmental organisation The Beach Bunch will also be observing Earth Day with a coastal clean-up where volunteers are urged to clear up litter along its picnic areas and the beach.
The cleanup activity is also expected to take place today with over 100 volunteers. Its main focal point is at the Tungku Beach.
The most recent beach cleanup by the NGO was carried out at Seri Kenangan Beach and the Sungai Liang Beach in February.
