AN EIGHTY-EIGHT year old local in Merangking whose house has been without proper roofing for months will be able to move back in permanently after his Village Head teamed up with the Belait District Office to install a new roof yesterday.

The roof was supplied through the Belait District Office's Welfare Fund, with the District Officer Hj Haris Othman and the Acting Penghulu of Mukim Bukit Sawat Hj Abdul Hamid Mumin attending the renovation works which took place over the course of Sunday.

Muhammad Hidup Abdullah Sipaim, who previously worked for the Department of Public Works (JKR), has been staying at his relatives house a few hundred meters away at night, and return to his house to farm and garden during the day.

He moved to his current house, which has water supply but no electricity, with his daughter over ten years ago after his wife passed away. He now has two grandchildren.

“I am very thankful to have my metal roofing roof replaced, because rain has been leaking heavily into the house, making it unhabitable,” said the 88-year-old.

Acting Village Head of Merangking Raimey Abdullah, whose consultative council worked to install the roofing yesterday said the organisation is planning to work on improving the house's foundation built on wooden stilts.

“We are continuously working with the Belait District Office to see how we can assist and improve the welfare of the less fortunate residents, especially senior citizens,” he said.
