THE family of retired military man Hj Rosman Hj Damit is patiently waiting for positive responses on applications for financial assistance from relevant agencies to rebuild the family home, which was almost destroyed in a fire two months ago.

Yesterday, Hj Rosman and his wife attended a donation ceremony at the Religious Affairs Office in Kuala Belait, receiving assistance in the form of cash, courtesy of Zakat funds from the Brunei Islamic Religious Council (MUIB).

Present to hand over the cash as well as school supplies for Hj Rosman's three school-going children was Head Religious Officer for Belait, Hj Asminan Hj Chuchu.

The Brunei Times previously reported that Hj Rosman's house at Spg 23, Jln Puragam at the Panaga National Housing Scheme had caught fire early morning on February 17. Both parents were not at home at the time, but all four children escaped harm.

Although quick actions by firefighters had put out the blaze, avoiding major fire damage, most of the house furniture as well as structure, including three bedrooms and two bathrooms on the first floor, were assessed to have suffered water damage. The fire also destroyed all the children's documentations such as birth certificates.

“I have applied for assistance from the Religious Affairs Office here so that I am able to repair my house. A week after the fire, a general contractor came to assess the damage. It was estimated that repairs would cost about $15,000,” said Hj Rosman.

The pensioner is currently unemployed but earns some income selling keropok lekor from his house. His wife is a worker at a school in Belait. His eldest child, who will turn 17 this year, has just completed school, while the three others are still schooling.

According to Nornazhirah Azmi, Head of the Zakat Collection and Distribution Section (Belait), the retired army man had also applied for assistance to the Community Development Department (JAPEM) and his various applications were being processed.

“Today, we are providing immediate assistance from Zakat funds and schooling assistance. We are still awaiting complete applications to go through before we can proceed with follow-up measures,” said Nornazhirah.

Since the fire, the Belait District Office has arranged for temporary accomodation for Hj Rosman's family at government barracks at Jln Jaya Indera in Mumong.

Hj Rosman expressed his family's gratitude for the temporary housing but said that they couldn't wait to move back to their own home.

"We hope that the relevant authorities can help me with the repair process. We miss living in our own house," he said.
