Malaysian detained over people smuggling charges

A MALAYSIAN man who was arrested last week at the Kuala Lurah Immigration Control Post is currently being investigated over the charges of people smuggling.
The defendant is facing seven charges of people smuggling and is accused of assisting two women and five children in their unlawful entry into Brunei to obtain financial benefit on April 12 while at the at the Immigration post.
During the proceedings yesterday, prosecuting officer Hjh Atiyyah Hj Abas applied for the defendant to be further remanded as investigations are still ongoing .
Further statements needs to be taken as well as to ascertain the validity of the passports that was found during the arrest.
The prosecuting officer said that the Immigration Department will be assisted by the Police Trafficking Unit during the investigation.
Meanwhile, the defendant is seeking to speak with his family as they are unaware of his current situation. The presiding magistrate Hjh Ervy Sufitriana Hj Abd Rahman granted the prosecution’s application for the defendant’s remand and scheduled a further mention of the case on April 28.
