BRUNEI will mark National Family Day 2015 on May 3, with the theme ‘Visionary Family’ retained for another year.

The National Family Day 2015 celebration committee met behind closed doors yesterday to discuss preparations and plans for this year’s celebrations across all four districts at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS).

This year’s National Family Day celebration will also re-use the ‘My Family, My Hope’ slogan.

Prior to the closed-door meeting, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Seri Setia Hj Hazair Hj Abdullah said this year’s celebrations will take place simultaneously throughout the country via the designation of specific zones.

As a way for the celebrations to make a bigger impact, there will be “mini themes” at the designated zones, which will become the focus at said zones.

“The mini themes will include issues seen as part of the social and national agenda that must be addressed,” YB Pehin Dato Hj Hazair said.

He added that the ability of families and individuals to save for retirement is an important practice to prevent them from falling prey to poverty.

“I hope any activities or programmes organised in conjunction with National Family Day this year will take into account and focus on promoting awareness to citizens about the need to change mindsets to become more independent and self-reliant,” the minister said.

Events that will be organised should also include messages that lead to the prevention of social issues and crime such as drug abuse and theft, which can threaten the peace and security of the country, YB Pehin Dato Hj Hazair added.

The minister said there was a need to give attention to the importance of the family as an institution, as it represents the “main stronghold” in ensuring social stability.

The family plays a major role in realising Vision 2035, and in establishing the country and citizens to have high quality lives, he said.

“Education, self-discipline, living with culture and morals, harmony, spiritual fulfilment, cleanliness, solidarity, caring nature, and the safeguarding of safety and welfare, as well as the environment all stem from the family institution and family relations,” the minister said.

YB Pehin Dato Hj Hazair also said that the role of National Family Day is to be a platform to elevate the role of the family in strengthening relations and with the community.

“It is through family institutions that we can empower community members to contribute positively and effectively towards the development of the nation,” he said.

“(Family institutions) enable us to produce a knowledgeable generation and human resource who have ‘first-class’ mindsets,” he said.

Due to this, the committee would want to see widespread celebration of National Family Day, one that can be felt in all villages and mukims in Brunei, YB Pehin Dato Hj Hazair further said.

National Family Day is celebrated every first Sunday of May.

Also present at the meeting were Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Hj Awg Halbi Hj Mohd Yussof, Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs Pg Dato Paduka Hj Bahrom Pg Hj Bahar, MCYS Deputy Minister Datin Paduka Hjh Adina Othman, and other government officials.
