Woman jailed for assault, extortion
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN
A WOMAN who was involved in causing hurt to a person to extort property was sentenced to serve 22 months in jail after she pleaded guilty to the charges.
The court document submitted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Dk Nurul Fairuz Pg Rosli states that on April 22, 2013, the defendant Nursyawani Hj Abd Salam, 21, and her friend Mohammad Zulkarnain Abd Manaf, 24, were driving their Proton Wira in Kiarong near the vicinity of Jame’ Mosque and they stopped near a car, a Hyundai I10, driven by the complainant Nursyazwani which was also at stationary at that time.
Mohammad Zulkarnain then indicated to the complainant to pull over at the Jame Mosque’s parking area. Unsure of why she was told to pull over, the complainant did what was told by Mohammad Zulkarnain nevertheless.
Seeing that the complainant was a vulnerable and naive person, Mohammad Zulkarnain then lured her into their car by asking her if he can borrow the complainant’s mobile phone to make a phone call.
The 21-year-old complainant believed them and got into the defendant’s car to lend her mobile phone.
While Nursyazwani was still in the Proton Wira with Mohammad Zulkarnain, Nursyawani then took the complainant’s car and drove off with it.
Mohammad Zulkarnain then subsequently drove off with the complainant to the vicinity of Jalan Ulu Tutong where they then met up with Nursyawani who had taken the complainant’s car earlier on.
They then stopped their car at the vicinity and had asked the complainant to give them her money and other belongings.
At the said vicinity, Mohammad Zulkarnain caused her to the complainant by kicking the lower side of the complainant’s body while the Nursyawani slapped the complainant on the face a few times. Nursyawani also threw some stones that she found around the vicinity to the complainant.
Fearing for her life, Nursyazwani then gave her bag to the duo. Mohammad Zulkarnain went through the bag but did not find anything that was worth stealing.
The duo then dragged the complainant to a bridge at the vicinity and tied her up using a seat belt which Mohammad Zulkarnain had cut from the complainant’s car.
Nursyawani and Mohammad Zulkarnain then fled the vicinity with Hyundai and leaving the complainant behind.
Only the Complainant’s car is now recovered.
On April 26, 2013, Nursyawani and Mohammad Zulkarnain were involved in stealing a Space Wagon that was parked at a workshop in Kg Luagan Dudok in Tutong. The defendants stole the car after their Honda Civic broke down at Jalan Kg Penanjong.
At the time, Mohammad Zulkarnain noticed that the car was unlocked and the key was still in the ignition. Seeing that the car was left unattended both Nursyawani and Mohammad Zulkarnain then proceeded to steal the car.
They then ran away with it and drove towards Panchor Murai to hide the car at their friend’s house at Kg Batong.
The complainant lodged a police report after he realised that his car had gone missing which led to Nursyawani’s arrest.
The Intermediate Court has ordered Nursyawani to serve the jail sentence with effect from May 25, 2014, when she was first remanded.
