MIPR holds biosecurity orientation

THE Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources (MIPR) on Wednesday held a Biosecurity Public Awareness briefing to raise awareness on the importance of the need to comply with regulations on importing and exporting agricultural commodities.
The Biosecurity Division under MIPR also aims to prevent agricultural and fisheries industries from suffering negative impacts such as the entry of pests into the Sultanate through imports.
The talk was organised by the Biosecurity Division under the MIPR to highlight the importance of understanding the Sanitary and Phytosanitary of food safety, animal and plant health.
Entrepreneurs from the agriculture and fishery industries along with representatives of government departments, Tutong grassroot leaders and committees from the association of “Majlis Perundingan Kampong” in Tutong attended the talk.
According to a press statement released by the Biosecurity Division, the raising of public awareness was mainly targeted at companies that import and export agricultural and fishery commodities, to ensure that the public and industries are aware of their concerns.
The roadshow also stressed the importance of activities related to import and export of forestry commodities presented by Forestry Department, CITES listed commodities by Wildlife Division and improvement on imported product quality and safety through proper packaging recommended by Department of Agriculture and Agrifood.
The division also hopes to ensure that the public understands the strategic and integrated approach in managing biosecurity risks, which will assist in safeguarding people’s health, the economy and the environment.
