THE royal orchestra’s music filled the Lapau or royal ceremonial hall in the heart of the capital yesterday to mark the start of wedding celebrations.

A ceremony known as Majlis Istiadat Membuka Gendang Jaga-Jaga took place as part of festivities for the royal wedding between His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Malik, 31, and 22-year-old Dk Raabi’atul ‘Adawiyyah Pg Hj Bolkiah.

Gendang Jaga-jaga refers to a set of traditional musical instruments that form the royal orchestra.

HRH Crown Prince Hj Al-Muhtadee Billah, as personal representative of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, attended the ceremony to oversee the proceedings.

Also present were HRH Prince Hj ‘Abdul ‘Azim and HRH Prince ‘Abdul Mateen.

The ceremony began with Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Dewa Major General (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Hj Mohammad Hj Daud informing Chief of Adat Istiadat YAM Pengiran Lela Cheteria Sahibun Najabah Pg Anak Hj Abdul Aziz that the ceremony was ready to proceed upon the approval of the Crown Prince.

YAM Pg Anak Hj Abdul Aziz then conveyed the message to the Crown Prince, who gave his approval to start the Majlis Istiadat Membuka Gendang Jaga-Jaga.

The designated court official, Hj Johan Areffen, then proceeded to the patarana (throne) to carry a nakara (a type of kettle drum), which is one of the five royal musical instruments to be played in front of the royal family, noblemen, aristocrats, state dignitaries and foreign diplomats.

The Nobat Diraja, or royal orchestra, then began with the beating of nakara in unison with the sounds of the gendang labek (small drum), serunai (oboe), canang (a traditional gong handcrafted in Brunei) and the gong. During the performance, a 21-gun salute was fired outside the Lapau building.

The ceremony concluded with the recital of doa selamat by State Mufti Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia (Dr) Ustaz Hj Awg Abdul Aziz Juned.

YAM Pg Anak Hj Abdul Aziz then informed the Crown Prince that the ceremony had been smoothly carried out before HRH delivered a sabda to conclude the ceremony.
