THE Tutong, Belait and Temburong Districts held their respective first meetings for the district-level celebration to mark the 69th birthday of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mui’zzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, yesterday.

Tutong District Officer Wardi Hj Mohd Ali called for “new and effective performances... geared towards raising awareness of a mindset shift” in line with the format of the national-level celebration.

In his speech as the chairperson of the executive committee for the monarch’s birthday celebration in Tutong, he said the performances will aim to “maintain and reinforce our sense of belonging” in support of government leadership and devotion to His Majesty.

As the birthday celebration is slated to take place during the holy months of Ramadhan and Syawal, Wardi advised the executive committee to plan “early and properly”, particularly for the meet-and-greet with His Majesty, by taking public holidays into consideration.

He hoped the birthday celebration would be carried out “successfully and flawlessly” in order to establish the annual occasion as a platform for strengthening the spirit of patriotism among the citizens and residents of the country.

Similar to previous years, he said the executive committee would continue to plan and indentify events that will enliven the birthday celebration such as the ‘Perayaan Festival’ and ‘Sungai Tutong Festival’ by drawing people within and outside the district.

In attendance at the meeting were Yang Berhormat Hj Ramli Hj Lahit, Legislative Council member and penghulu of Mukim Telisai, and Hj Haizul Hj Rizal, Assistant Tutong District Officer.

The closed-door meeting took place at the Tutong Community Hall.

Belait District

The Belait Executive Committee for the 69th birthday celebrations of His Majesty met at the residence of Belait District Officer Hj Haris Hj Othman to discuss district-wide preparations for celebrations later this year.

Activities that have been tentatively confirmed include the ceremonial raising of the national flag, a thanksgiving ceremony, a Khatam al-Quran ceremony, a knowledge ceremony and a Surah memorising competition.

The meeting also looked to verify the expenses of the previous year’s celebrations, to identify the relevant parties involved in preparing for His Majesty’s anticipated meet and greet and the setting up and construction of equipment and stages needed.

The first order of yesterday’s meeting was to disband the previous year’s committee and to appoint the members of the current Executive Committee.

Among those participating in the meeting were Belait District representative to the Legislative Council Yang Berhormat Hj Md Yussof Hj Dulamin, mukim and village heads and heads of government departments.

Temburong District

Temburong’s meeting, meanwhile, was held at the Community Hall Complex in Pekan Bangar.

The meeting was chaired by Temburong District Officer Hj Abdul Hamid Dato Paduka Hj Abdullah.

A statement issued by the Temburong District Office said among the agenda during the meeting were the review and recap of last year’s expenses for the monarch’s 68th birthday celebration for the district.

Last year’s committee was dissolved followed by the appointment of new committee members.

The meeting also discussed the format for this year’s celebration, including the performances and the meet-and-greet session with His Majesty.

In attendance was Legislative Council member Yang Berhormat Hj Sulaiman Hj Ahad, heads of government departments in the Temburong District, as well as penghulus and village heads.
