THE SOCIETY for Community Outreach & Training (SCOT) will be organising a run this May 10 at the Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien in the capital.

The run is being held to raise funds for SCOT Education, where youth have the chance of spending two weeks in Cambodia to teach the English Language to underprivileged children.

Three categories of 3, 5 and 10 kilometres will be contested, under the titles of “Hopeful Fighter”, “Passionate Fighter” and “Knowledgeable Fighter” respectively.

“The majority of the funds to be raised will be channeled to serve an additional commitment to provide ‘scholarships of empowerment’ to the most progressive and deserving students for phase 2 of SCOT Education,” said the Chairman of SCOT Anwar Mohammad.

The second phase targets “self-training” to allow individuals to empower themselves and grow confidence through the process of teaching in Cambodia.

“Looking back today, many of the recipients who were once shy and withdrawn are now able to converse in English, and most importantly the majority have successfully passed their job interviews, securing themselves a financially stable future to ease the burden of their family,” he said.

SCOT Education, first initiated in 2013, is in line with the Nation’s 2035 vision of creating an education strategy that prepares youth for employment in a world that is increasingly competitive.

Before their two week stint in Cambodia, participants spend 11 weeks teaching English at the Youth Development Centre in iBrunei.

The Deputy Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Datin Paduka Hjh Adina Hj Othman officiated at the launch of the SCOT Run 2015 yesterday. Also present was the British High Commissioner to Brunei David Campbell, whose mission is also to support the run.
