FOREST fires at the Km 30 mark of the Seria-Lumut bypass were extinguished on Monday afternoon, after a week long struggle to contain them.

Sungai Liang Station Commander Muhammad Ali Hassan said the fires along Km 30 were put out at 4pm on Monday, after continued assistance from the Department of Public Works and the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation in supplying water to the operation's 11,250-litre makeshift dam.

“With the fires by the Seria-Lumut bypass completely put out, only a small area, 300 metres inward from the same stretch of road is still affected by fires,” said the commander.

“The remaining affected area has proven to be problematic because the peat land underneath the root of the trees, and the difficulty in supplying water.”

Village Head of Lumut I and Legislative Council member Yang Berhormat Hj Mohd Shafiee Ahmad also made a visit to Sungai Liang's operation against forest fires on Monday.
