TEMBURONG representative at the Legislative Council (LegCo) Yang Berhormat Hj Sulaiman Hj Ahad yesterday proposed that the Hari Raya Aidil Adha public holiday be extended to two days, so that celebrations could be carried out in a more joyous manner.

During the morning proceedings of yesterday’s 11th LegCo session, YB Hj Sulaiman said the one-day Aidil Adha public holiday was “inadequate” for korban duties that are carried out during the celebrations.

He said civil servants were forced to leave their workplaces to take part in the celebrations.

In response, Minister of Finance II Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Setia Dato Seri Setia Hj Abdul Rahman Hj Ibrahim said Muslims can carry out korban duties on the first day of Hari Raya Aidil Adha and on the three days of tasyrik afterwards.

“Even though there is only one day allocated for the Hari Raya Aidil Adha public holiday, this does not complicate or hinder Muslims in this country from celebrating Hari Raya Aidil Adha and carrying out korban on tasyrik days,” said the minister.

He further pointed to past media reports as evidence of joyous Hari Raya Aidil Adha celebrations – particularly korban ceremonies on tasyrik days.

“Such atmosphere contributes to an increase in spirit and culture of ‘gotong-royong’ (community get-together) among the working class as well as among residents at the mukim and village levels. It also strengthens community integration – be it at the community, government or grassroots level,” he said.
