Flash flood victims receive donation
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN
THE Community Development Department (JAPEM) yesterday donated $147,500 to 295 families affected by the recent flash floods in the Brunei-Muara district.
The donation was presented by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Seri Setia Hj Hazair Hj Abdullah, to representatives of families in a ceremony that took place at Mukim Sengkurong Community Hall in Jerudong.
Recipients in an interview with The Brunei Times said that they were thankful to the government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam for the donations and aid given to them.
Siti Aminah Hj Mohiddin, a resident in Ban 3, Sengkurong, said that she is planning on floodproofing her home.
“We live in a low-lying area and I thought of maybe building barricades to prevent floodwater from rushing into the house,” she said.
She added that the recent flood was up to thigh level and it was the worst incident in her seven years of living in Ban 3.
Another recipient of the donation, Siti Maimun Hj Saman, said that the depth of floodwater in her area in Kg Jerudong was up to waist level.
“Approximately 90 per cent of my properties were damaged from the flood… Thankfully, my family is safe,” she said.
Amalina Abdullah, who is living in Sg Tampoi, said that although the flash flood was brief, it was enough to destroy everything in her house.
“We are not sure what to do next. As of now we do not know how much budget is given to us but whatever it is, we are more than thankful,” she told The Brunei Times.
Areas that were affected in the flash floods were Kg Sengkurong ‘A’, Kg Sengkurong ‘B’, Kg Jerudong, Kg Mulaut, Kg Tg Nangka, Kg Kulapis, Kg Lugu and Kg Katimahar in Mukim Sengkurong; Kg Batong, Kg Masin, and Kg Batu Ampar in Mukim Pengkalan Batu; Kg Menglait in Mukim Gadong; Kg Kilanas and Kg Bengkurong in Mukim Kilanas and Kg Junjongan in Mukim Lumapas.
