SURI Seri Begawan Hospital (SSBH) in Kuala Belait yesterday launched its Healthy Lifestyle Programme for Senior Citizens 2015, backing the aims of the hospital's Senior Citizen Health Promotion Support Group (PENYULUH) for yet another year.

The programme, which starts next month, will run until June and include a range of activities for its senior citizen participants, including briefings on hearing, sight and oral health as well as sessions on healthy dietary habits, physical activities and correct use of medication.

In her address to participants, guest of honour Dr Hjh Rahmah Hj Mohd Said, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Professional and Technical) at the Ministry of Health, said that the programme's ultimate goal was to empower senior citizens towards “active ageing” so that older people could live longer lives while enjoying greater quality of life.

“It is the process of optimising opportunities for their involvement in health and safety to increase their quality of life as they age,” said Dr Hjh Rahmah.

She spoke of the importance of creating awareness for the so-called four “geriatric giants” manifesting as common health issues of the elderly, which spell out signs and symptoms such as immobility, incontinence, depression and dementia. Among some of the new features of this year’s programmes will be lessons on Tai chi (a Chinese form of exercise focusing on stress relief popular with the elderly).

Guests at the event were treated to a demonstration performed by members of the Taiji Qigong Shibashi association based in Seria.

Programme participants were also able to take advantage of free medical screenings conducted by health professionals at the hospital.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that in 2050, the world's above-60-years population would breach the two billion mark — more than triple the 605 million data of 2000.

It is projected that in 2024, Brunei's current population in the same age group of 27,273 will double.

Also present at the event were Hjh Kertini Orang Kaya Paduka Setia Diraja Hj Abu Hanifah, chairperson of PENYULUH and Mohmad Hj Abd Hamid, SSBH’s Chief Executive Officer.
