A MAN has been fined $16,800 after pleading guilty to possessing 44 cartons of untaxed cigarettes.

The court document stated that on December 16, 2014, Hasnan Hj Hamidon, 32, was found in possession of the contraband when customs officers at the Sungai Tujoh Control Post in Kuala Belait inspected the car he was driving.

While being questioned by the Royal Customs and Excise Department in Kuala Belait, Hasnan admitted to purchasing the goods in Miri for $274 and knew that bringing in cigarettes without a permit is against customs regulations. The excise duty for the cigarettes was $2,100.

During the proceedings before Senior Magistrate Harnita Zelda Skinner, the court allowed a grace period until June 30 for the defendant to pay the fine or face 12 months in jail.

The court released the defendant on $16,800 bail and one local surety and ordered the seized goods to be forfeited to the state.
