JAPEM gets around $116,000 for National Orphans Fund

THE Community Development Department (JAPEM) received nearly $116,000 worth of donations yesterday for the National Orphans Fund.

The amount was raised from the SMS Brunei Prihatin campaign presented by local telcos DST Communications Sdn Bhd (DST) and Progressif Cellular Sdn Bhd which took place from July 7 to August 20 last year.

A handover ceremony was held at the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Sports (MCYS) building where the donations were received by the Deputy Minister of MCYS, Datin Paduka Hjh Adina Othman.

DST successfully raised $88,945 from the campaign while Progressif Cellular raised $27,016. A separate donation of $20,000 was made by staff and officers of DST.

Presenting the donation on behalf of DST was its Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Hj Marsad Hj Ismail, and for Progressif Cellular, it was Nurul Haniah Hj Jaafar, head of the Legal and Enforcement Section.

The SMS Brunei Prihatin donation campaign for the National Orphans Fund started in 2005 and entered its 10th year in 2014.

JAPEM in a press release said the annual campaign is a collaboration between JAPEM, Radio Televisyen Brunei (RTB), DST and Progressif Cellular.

It said the aim was to make it easier for the public to donate to the fund through the SMS service. The overall amount of the fund currently totals $297,861.39.

An officer at JAPEM said members of the public who wished to donate to the fund may do so at Level 2 of the MCYS building.

According to data obtained by The Brunei Times the total number of orphans in the Sultanate as of December 2014 was 4,659.

Brunei–Muara District has 3,193 orphans followed by Belait District with 653. Tutong and Temburong districts have 596 and 217 respectively.
