Sg Matan Fishing Festival a success
THE five-day fishing festival hosted by Kg Sg Matan is said to be successful, after managing to earn an estimated total of $8,000 in income.
Village head of Kg Sg Matan said that around a thousand visitors dropped by the festival over the five-day period.
“It was not just locals that visited the village, but foreign tourists as well, especially from the neighbouring countries,” Pg Hj Abd Rahman Pg Hj Zainal said.
At the closing ceremony yesterday, he added that the festival also managed to attract the interest of the media, tourist agencies and local communities, who not only visited the village but also participated in the events and activities offered.
The five-day fishing festival culminated with the final-round of the perahu jumpung (a small traditional boat) race. Residents and visitors to Kg Sungai Matan lined up along its cultural hall and wooden walkway to cheer for the participants as they raced by.
The race was divided into two categories: two-paddlers per boat and three-paddlers per boat.
In the morning, two qualifying heats were held for each category where the top five finishers would proceed to compete in the final.
The final which was held in the afternoon was watched by the Brunei-Muara Acting District Officer, Mislee Hj Abd Karim.
Afterwards, the acting district officer toured the stalls and displays before proceeding to view the various foods prepared for one of the competitions.
The acting district officer then proceeded to present the prizes to the winners of the competitions held over the five-day period. The atmosphere throughout the event was lively, as the residents applauded and congratulated their fellow neighbours upon receiving their prizes.
Pg Hj Abd Rahman said that the festival had helped in forging closer relations as it brought together families, as the collective efforts of residents, hailing from different generations, helped the success of the festival.
