HM to meet Brunei students in London
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN
HIS Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mui’zzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, will be meeting Bruneians at the London Hilton on Park Lane today.
Bruneian students in the United Kingdom said the meet and greet with His Majesty does not only represent an opportunity for students to meet their leader, but also an occasion for them to meet students from other universities.
Afifah Syahirah Abdullah Soefri, 20, said she looks forward to attending the gathering for the first time as she always went back to Brunei when His Majesty visited the previous times.
“I feel excited and so grateful to have the opportunity to meet His Majesty and his family in person. The meet and greet gives us the opportunity to also reunite with friends who study at institutions that are far away, making the event’s environment feel more like home,” she said.
According to the third year Architecture student at the University of Nottingham, she will be expecting His Majesty to remind the students the reason they are in the UK, which was to study and to make a positive contribution towards Brunei and achieve the Vision 2035 for the country’s growth and prosperity.
Syazwana Souyono, a Masters in Forensic Science student at Kings College London, shared the same expectations for the meet and greet, as she was also expecting His Majesty to give a motivational titah.
As this would be her second time attending the meet and greet, she is also expecting the monarch to address the importance of achieving Vision 2035, Syariah law and staying true to one’s roots in a foreign country.
“Other than meeting His Majesty and listening to his motivational titah, the event would also be a good opportunity for us to meet other familiar faces in the UK, as some do live quite far apart from others, making it difficult and expensive to meet up,” she added.
First year undergraduate at University of Portsmouth, Dk Noor Amal Hazirah Pg Harun, said “I feel excited to be meeting His Majesty and also all my friends studying from different universities in the United Kingdom”.
The 19-year-old added that she felt honoured that His Majesty went all the way from Brunei to visit the students there and give them a chance to greet him.
