THE Brunei Islamic Religious Council (MUIB) yesterday donated cash to the victims of a recent house fire in Kota Batu.

MUIB Secretary Hj Abd Wahab Hj Safar presented a cash donation of $1,600 to Pg Hj Md Daud Pg Ahmad, whose two-storey house was destroyed in a fire at dawn on November 24 this year.

During a ceremony held at the Ministry of Religious Affairs headquarters, the 88-year-old recipient expressed his appreciation to the government for the assistance.

The $1,600 was later divided, with $400 going to Pg Hj Md Daud and the rest to his son-in-law, 46-year-old Pg Hj Jaya Shahbani Pg Hj Abu Bakar, as the two families lived under the same roof. Pg Hj Jaya also received school supplies.

Pg Hj Md Daud, a widower, is supported by his daughter, who is a civil servant. Pg Hj Jaya supports his wife and four children, who are between the ages of 8 and 15.

Pg Hj Md Daud also expressed appreciation towards Acting Brunei-Muara District Officer Md Sunadi Hj Buntar for arriving in the early hours of the tragic event.

“He came and helped us at the time. I will never forget that,” he added.

Md Sunadi said it is the responsibility of all individuals to assist those who face hardships.

Pg Hj Jaya said the fire destroyed the entire house. “The fire also destroyed my car. Now we travel with the help of my siblings or other family members,” he added.

Nevertheless, he said he was grateful that no one was injured or killed during the tragedy.

Pg Hj Jaya’s wife said the fire might have been caused by faulty wiring. The first floor of the house was made of plywood. When the fire broke out, it collapsed, crashing through the ground floor and destroying the entire structure.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

Pg Hj Md Daud also expressed appreciation for previous donations from the Community Development Department (JAPEM), Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (YSHHB) and the Brunei-Muara District Office.

“Bless them. May Allah SWT return the favour to those who helped us, InsyaAllah,” he added.
