THE Volunteering Festival was kicked off yesterday to enhance the spirit of volunteerism in youths so that it can grow to become a movement that offers help without any payment, according to Brunei’s Director of Youth and Sports.

Hj Abdul Malik Hj Mohammad made the remarks during the opening ceremony of the festival, which he said was in conjunction with International Volunteer Day, held each year on December 5.

He added that International Volunteer Day was introduced by the United Nations in 1985 as a platform to encourage community involvement by intensifying volunteer work through various activities, including partnership activities.

“This festival aims to show appreciation for the contributions made by the volunteers in the country while also to further increase awareness about the services and contributions of volunteers to the society,” he said.

The festival also aims to support and pay tribute to the community, specifically the youths, who engage in volunteer work and usher change, whether it be national, regional or international, in accordance with Brunei’s Vision 2035.

“What’s more important is that the spirit of volunteerism needs to be lush and vibrant among the younger generation today and continue to grow to become part of the culture we live in,” said Hj Abd Malik.

The festival was organised by the Youth and Sports Department of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports with the help of Battle Pro Marketing and Management Services, with the theme “Volunteers, Make a Change”.

The festival will run for three days and feature various activities. The first day included a forum using the theme of the festival as its title that had three well-known volunteers as panelists: Hj Ali Yusri Hj Abd Ghafor, Nurizzatul Izzah Hj Abd Rahman and Hj Abd Rashid Hj Damit.

The festival will also have a recruitment drive for volunteers which allows various agencies that are directly or indirectly involved in the development of voluuntueer work to attract and recruit new members, said the director.

He said over the course of the three days, there will also be a Volunteer Showcase where the agencies involved will be given the opportunity to share their programmes and experience and give a presentation on the work they’ve done.

A Youth Entrepreneurship Expo is also being held during the festival with youths selling various items to encourage the involvement of young people in entrepreneurship activities.

The festival was launched by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Seri Setia Hj Hazair Hj Abdullah, who also launched the Volunteering Calendar at the Indoor Stadium.
