INTERNATIONAL Volunteers Day (IVD) will be celebrated through a three-day festival at the Indoor Stadium, Berakas, according to officials from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
During a press conference yesterday, officials from the Youth and Sport Department revealed that the United Nation’s international observance will be commemorated from December 12 to 14, with several activities lined up to include all members of society.
The Acting Deputy Director at the Youth and Sports Department, Muhd Aziman Hj Nasir, said that the festival is one of the ways to provide support and a special honour to the involvement of volunteers into their work and as agents of change at all levels: local, national and global.
He added that the festival, themed ‘Make change happen, volunteer!’, would also act as a venue to improve society’s awareness on the existence and contribution of the volunteerism to various communities.
Acting Youth and Sports Head Officer, Hj Md Rosfazilah Hj Yusli added that the festivities, while directed at youth, are fitted for the whole family, especially parents.
“We want parents to know and understand what actually goes on during volunteering. When it comes to youth volunteerism, it cannot be denied that parents play a huge role in making things happen.
“If parents recognise the benefits and goodwill involved with volunteering, InsyaAllah, their children will be more involved in such activities,” he explained.
The festival, in its third edition, will be open to the public, and the department is anticipating over 5,000 visitors over the weekend.
During the festival, non-governmental organisations, volunteering bodies, youth and sports associations, civil society organisations, corporate and community bodies as well as youth groups will be present to showcase the work that they have done. They will also participate in a ‘volunteers recruitment drive’ where they will open up membership registrations.
Additionally, a youth entrepreneurship expo will also be held with over 40 booths conducting various activities and sellers offering various goods for sale. A forum involving three local speakers will also be held where they will discuss the meaning of this year’s IVD theme.
Established in 1985, the IVD is celebrated on December 5.
