Ministry walks for Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims

NEON and orange shirts filled the streets surrounding the Ministry of Communications (MinComm) building yesterday as a way of remembering road traffic victims.
The Brunei Darussalam National Road Safety Council through the Land Transport Department (JPD) organised a walkathon as part of their programme for this year’s World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.
Prior to the start of the event Acting Director at the Land Transport Department, Dr Hj Supry Hj Awang Ladi, briefed the participant on road safety that should observed throughout the walk.
Dr Hj Supry advised participants to walk on the pavements by the side of the roads and that they should walk against the flow of traffic. He said that participants of the walkathon should also be aware of their surroundings when walking on the road.
Before leading the participants on the walkathon, the Minister of Communications, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Abdullah Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar took part in a lively aerobics session as part of the warm up.
Accompanying the minister was his wife, Datin Hjh Hasiah Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Setia Dato Paduka Hj Hasim. The minister and his wife both sounded the horn to start the walkathon, and led the male and female group on their respective routes. The male participants took on a 3.5km route whereas a 2.5km route was prepared for the females.
A statement prepared by the Road Safety Unit under JPD said that the annual walkathon is one of the initiatives taken by the Brunei Darussalam National Road Safety Council to raise the public’s awareness on the importance of prioritising road safety.
It also said that the walkathon was organised to support the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020.
A total of 200 participants took part in the walkathon, which was also attended by the Permanent Secretary at MinComm, Abd Mutalib Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Hj Mohamad Yusof, Acting Deputy Permanent Secretary at MinComm, Hjh Airah Hj Abdullah, and the Acting Director of Land Transport, Dr Hj Supry Hj Awang Ladi.
