YOUTH expressed an overwhelming response to join the three-day Ash-Shaliheen Camp, organised by the mosque youth association, incorporating spirituality and culture.

During the closing ceremony, the camp coordinators, Izzati Hj Hamdani and Waajidun Ni’am Hj Dollah told The Brunei Times that they had received almost 300 inquiries about the event in the two weeks they advertised it.

However, they were only able to accommodate 81 youths comprising 34 young men and 47 women aged 16 to 21 to the three-day camp.

“It was a bit of a surprise to us, especially being the school holidays; I actually expected people to travel overseas but the participation was beyond our expectations. All we did was stick posters at the mosque and use social media to advertise the camp,” explained Waajidun.

The camps were separated for male and female participants; male participants conducted their activities at the Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) mosque while female participants stayed at UBD’s female hostel.

Coordinator for the female camp, Izzati, said the activities were the same for all participants; hands-on activities were conducted to ensure that participants truly understood aspects of the Quran and Islam such as their iman (faith) along with mass prayers, qiamulail, Quran recitals and motivational talks by invited guest speakers.

“We are still thinking about where to go next but there will be other programmes in the future for the participants, Insyaallah,” added Waajidun.

In a statement issued by the Ash-Shaliheen mosque youth, they hope to conduct the camp on an annual basis in hopes of achieving the objective of shaping the future generation to become leaders in building a “Negara Zikir”.

Themed “Ini Pilihanku” (“This is my choice”), the objective of the camp was to instil interest in youth to participate in religious activities and motivate those who wish to explore the potential they have to become someone better.

At the closing ceremony, guest of honour and Brunei-Muara Mosque Affairs Officer, Hj Jamil Hj Gani encouraged youth to participate in similar activities to strengthen their beliefs. He also presented certificates and prizes to participants.
