EIGHTY-SEVEN residents from the Temburong District were given an in-depth briefing on the role and responsibilities of the Information Department after the department’s two-day Informative Community Programme yesterday.

Information Officer and Head of the Community Unit Ali Termizzi Hj Ramlli/Hj Ramli told The Brunei Times that the programme was aimed to inform the community on various current issues in the country, particularly the programme’s theme of ‘Entrepreneurship and Abuse Issues’.

“The programme exposes villagers – especially village chiefs and penghulus – to the roles and responsibilities of the information department as the eyes, ears and tongue of the government,” he said on the sidelines of the Certificate Presentation Ceremony for the programme yesterday.

He explained that the participants were also briefed by various agencies, including the Royal Brunei Police Force and the Attorney General’s Chambers, on the importance of counselling services for abuse victims and their rights according to the law.

“We emphasised on the topic of abuse because there are many abuse cases that most people do not hear about. The briefings help to inform the participants that they should not be afraid if they were on the receiving end of abuse as there are various help they can get and certain rights they are entitled to,” said the information officer.

The programme is carried out yearly for all four districts, with the theme continuously changing to reflect current issues, he added.

The participants also visited Kampong Mulaut to get a better look at their One Village One Product initiative and the Riza Group Poultry Company in Jalan Bebatik Kulapis, yesterday.

All 87 participants were awarded with certificates yesterday by the Acting Director of the Information Department Mawardi Hj Mohammad.
