PROJECTS by the Survey Department, Ministry of Development; Psychiatry Department of Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Hospital, and the Meteorological Department, Ministry of Communication were awarded gold, silver and bronze awards for the Excellent Civil Service Award 2014 at the 21st Civil Service Day celebration

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzadin Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam presented the three teams with their awards at the International Convention Centre yesterday.

The projects were judged based on the project’s objective, implementation and achievements. The Brunei Times talked to the teams at the sideline of the celebration.

The Survey Department bagged the gold award with their project ‘Survey Spatial Data Infrastructure’.

The project make use of technology allow the Survey Department, as well as others relevant governmental agencies to access information related to land via their geo-portal. The portal is also accessible to the public.

This facilitates relevant departments in compiling information, said Hj Ali Bakar Hj Kasim, Acting Surveyor General.

“Previously (they have to go to the field site) for the info, now they can access the info from the geo-portal. This project is beneficial not only for the department, but also other agencies, in terms of sharing and accessing the information as well as creating value added to the existing information.

This geo-portal can also be accessed by the public. If the public wished to know the location of their land, just go to our geo-portal and enter the lot number of your land for the details, he added.

Psychiatry Department of the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Hospital was awarded silver for their ‘establishment of Assisted Living Unit for acute psychiatric patients’ project’. The project began in 2012.

The Meteorological Department, Ministry of Communications went home with the bronze award with their ‘ Brunei WX application’.

The project aimed at improving the effectiveness of weather information dissemination through mobile technology to the public, governmental and non-governmental agencies.

It provides features such as daily updates of the weather forecast for Brunei, minimum and maximum temperatures throughout the day, daily wind conditions among others. The app is also equipped with warnings and useful information on the possibilities or occurrence of flood and strong winds. The application can be downloaded for free at iTunes app store and Google Play.

There are currently more than 10,000 registered users. The team also plan on improving the app especially in terms of creating user-friendly graphics and contents.

They have taken into consideration the users’ feedback and there has been suggestion to (release) the app in two version- English and Malay. Currently, there is only an English version.

The gold award recipient went home with trophy, cash $8,000 and certificate of appreciations. Silver award recipient received a trophy, $5,000 in cash and certificate of appreciations. Bronze award recipient received a trophy, $3,000 in cash and certificate of appreciations.
