Nation’s youth run for public health

OVER 2,000 participants laced up across four districts yesterday in the name of public health as part of this year’s “National Youth Run”.
The Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Seri Setia Hj Hazair Hj Abdullah led the race at the Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium, where 1, 358 people competed in four categories: men’s and women’s 10km open, a 4km fun run and a special needs category for 3km.
In Belait, 247 runners of various ages took part in the 10km distance men’s and women’s open which started in Mumong Sports Complex.
The rest of the participants were joined by the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Hj Awg Halbi Hj Mohd Yussof in the “Fun Run” category. He had earlier flagged off the Open Category races.
Also present was Belait District Officer Hj Haris Othman.
During the “Fun Run”, friends and families took a leisurely jog using shorter 4-km route along Jln Maulana to cross the Panaga National Housing Scheme before heading back to the Mumong Sports Complex.
In the districts of Tutong and Temburong, the Deputy Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Datin Paduka Hjh Adina Othman and the Deputy Minister of Education Dato Seri Setia Awg Hj Yussof Hj Ismail were the guests of honour respectively.
Other activites running alongside yesterday’s event were anti-doping and health promotion displays initiated by the Department of Youth and Sport and the Brunei Athletics Association as well as a colouring competition for children six to eight years old, and a second category for those aged nine to twelve.
