A FILIPINO MAN was sentenced to serve three months in jail and three lashes of the cane after he pleaded guilty to overstaying in Brunei.

Defendant Maugbog Miquel Bragat, 31, was arrested on August 7 when he went to the Visit Pass section of the Immigration and National Registration Department to extend his visit pass in Brunei.

Upon checking the passport, the officer on-duty found that the defendant’s immigration pass had expired since November 17, 2013.

Investigation revealed that Maubog last entered Brunei on October 25, 2013 through the Kuala Lurah Immigration Control Post and he was granted with a social visit pass valid for 14 days.

Furthermore, Maubog last extended his visit pass on November 9, 2013 and he was ordered to leave Brunei no later than November 16, 2013.

Maubog, in his statement, admitted that before the expiration of his immigration pass, he gave his passport to an individual named “Rahman”, a Bruneian and paid $600 for the extension of his stay in Brunei.

The defendant had failed to report to the relevant authority regarding his passport.

The court has ordered Maubog to serve the jail term immediately.
