UNIVERSITI Brunei Darussalam (UBD) will host the first Smarter Cities Conference and Workshop next week.

Slated for November 12, the conference and workshop will address topics such as transportation management, infrastructure and capital planning as well as water management.

In a press statement, UBD said the full-day event will be facilitated by a group of Smarter Cities experts from IBM, open source solutions provider Red Hat and Esri, a geospatial solutions company.

During the event, IBM, Red Hat and Esri will showcase solutions to address challenges that cities face, such as traffic congestion, energy usage, and the efficient management of city resources to cater to growing population demands.

“A growing number of cities are committed to a smart city vision in order to meet the challenges of sustainable growth, help rejuvenate their economies, and establish their place in the cleantech and IT-related industries of the future,” the statement read.

It added that the focus on cities as engines for sustainable economic development is closely associated with unprecedented levels of urbanisation that characterise the 21st century.

“Most of the world’s citizens now live in cities, but this is only the beginning of a global social, economic, environmental, and political transformation,” the statement said.

The conference is co-organised by UBD’s e-Government Innovation Centre (eG.InC), IBM Malaysia and B.S Syscom (B) Sdn Bhd, an IBM business partner.
