HIS Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday arrived in Penang, where he will be conferred an Honorary Doctorate of Law from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).

USM Vice-chancellor Professor Dato’ Omar Osman said His Majesty will be receiving the honorary doctorate today for his visionary role in developing the sultanate’s higher education system.

Speaking on the sidelines of the university’s Research Excellence Showcase to mark its 50th convocation, Professor Dato’ Omar said it was an honour for USM to receive His Majesty in person.

“We (USM) believe that the role His Majesty has played in developing higher education in Brunei up to this point has brought many benefits to the people of Brunei, and his continuous vision for it in the future is something that is very virtuous and pure,” he said.

The award is also intended at recognising the many productive relationships that USM and higher education institutions in Brunei have shared over the years.

“Our relationship with Universiti Brunei Darussalam has been significant, dating back to over 20 years when our previous vice-chancellor first sent a delegation to UBD.

“We also have very good connections with several institutions including the Seri Begawan Religious Teachers University College, Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB), Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA),” he added.

His Majesty touched down at the Penang International Airport yesterday afternoon where he was greeted by His Royal Highness Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Ibni Al-Marhum Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail, the Raja of Perlis and USM Chancellor before proceeding to the Shangri-La Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa.

The monarch also briefly met Bruneian students studying in Malaysia.
