Minister attends urbanisation conference in S Korea

THE Minister of Development is in Seoul, South Korea to address housing and urban development issues at a conference.

Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Suyoi Hj Osman is attending the Fifth Asia Pacific Ministerial Conference on Urban Development which started yesterday.

Themed ‘Equal Opportunity for Sustainable Development’, the three-day conference aims to address the challenges of housing and urbanisation in the Asia and Pacific and to find feasible solutions.

The Ministry of Development in a statement said this year’s conference focuses on urban regeneration and rehabilitation; upgrading slum and informal settlements; urban development focused on natural and climate change disasters; and financing for sustainable housing.

“The (conference) promotes sustainable housing and urban development for human settlements in the Asia-Pacific region,” the statement read.

“The conference does this by providing a setting to share information related on poverty, gender inequality, environmental pollution and natural disasters from a housing and urban policy perspective,” it added.

The minister was accompanied by Deputy Permanent Secretary of Development Hj Marzuke Hj Mohsin, Town and Country Planning Commissioner Shahrom Hj Suhaimi and other senior Ministry of Development officers.

Along with the sultanate, the conference was also attended by ministers from 68 member nations that share the same concerns in housing and urban development. – Abdul Azim Kassim
