THE Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources (MIPR) is pushing initiatives to improve quality and safety of farms and fisheries products in the country, said its minister yesterday.

Minister Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Hj Yahya Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar gave a keynote address during Farmers and Fisherman Day at the Dewan Muhibbah.

The minister noted that the agriculture and fisheries industry amounted to around $390 million in 2013. He also noted that Brunei is fully self-sufficent when it comes to chicken products and chicken egg products, 80 per cent self-sufficent in tropical vegetables, 50 per cent in tropical fruits and 80 per cent in the production of seafood.

“Thus, strategies and programmes related to improving farm biosecurity; ISO 17025 accreditation for laboratories, agriculture and fisheries; updating legislation and enforcement of acts as well as enforcement of guidelines to produce quality halal products is ongoing,” he said.

He said that so far, the ministry has obtained ISO 17025, an international standard for test laboratories for their Veterinary Services and the Laboratory for Safety and Agrifoods from the Singapore Accreditation Council.

He also highlighted the implementation of the Brunei Good Agriculture Practices Logo.

“For livestock products, we also have implemented logo veterinary inspection, which is a confirmation that the products produced have passed veterinary inspection in accordance with the rules and guidelines that have been set,” he said.
