UNISSA to offer new programmes
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN
MORE academic and professional training programmes will be offered at the Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) in its effort to fulfil current demands in various agencies involved in the implementation and enforcement of the Syariah law.
Rector of UNISSA Dr Hj Norarfan Hj Zainal stated this in his welcoming remarks during the university’s fourth Hafl al-Takharruj (convocation ceremony) held at the International Convention Centre yesterday.
Two of the new programmes which were mentioned yesterday are Certificate in Syariah Law System and High Diploma in Syariah Law System.
“Apart from that, UNISSA is also actively drafting executive development programmes which will cater for legal officers.
“All these are initiated by UNISSA on the basis of its responsibility to uphold wholeheartedly His Majesty’s titah to be united and support unequivocally the implementation of Allah’s law in our beloved country,” the rector said.
He added that in conjunction with the Mahrajan Hafl al-Takharruj (convocation festival), UNISSA has organised activities and programmes which are academically and capacity-building inclined such as seminars, workshops, public talks and publication of research books.
One of the workshops, the rector mentioned, was the English Writing Workshop which was organised in collaboration with The Brunei Times.
UNISSA, like any other high education institutions, is also doing its best to improve its research fields in the perspective of Islam.
This includes UNISSA’s direct involvement to tackle social issues in the Sultanate, one of which was carried out jointly with the Narcotics Control Bureau.
“Entitled ‘Drug Abuse Among Locals in Brunei Darussalam: Causes and Solutions’, the results of the research have been published and presented in seminars locally and abroad, which includes the International Drug Prevention and Rehabilitation Conference (Prevent 2014) organised by Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia, recently,” Dr Hj Norarfan said.
Additionally, the memorandum of understanding signed with Al-Azhar University, Egypt in February will further ensure academic and research excellence, particularly in research relating to Mazhab Syafi’e.
Through these initiatives, UNISSA hopes to upgrade its profile to be one of the prestigious Islamic high education institutions, both regionally and internationally.
The convocation ceremony saw a total of 115 graduates receiving their certificates from His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam. A graduation dinner was held the same evening.
