Sungai Matan villageready to accept tourists

A KEY handing over ceremony for the opening of various tourist attractions of Sungai Matan Village took place yesterday.

The Brunei-Muara Acting District Officer, Mohd Sunadi Hj Buntar, who attended the ceremony as the guest of honour, received the key from the Acting Director of Tourism Development Department, Dyg Mariani Hj Sabtu.

Mohd Sunadi presented the key to the Sungai Matan Village Chief, Pg Hj Abd Rahman Pg Hj Zainal.

The ceremony concluded with a tour of the tourist attractions led by Pg Hj Abd Rahman, along with members of the village to showcase their facilities, products and activities.

The village has implemented activities for visitors, such as visiting the floating fish cages and catching them using traditional methods, cultural performances by the village’s youth, taking part in the daily activities and occupations of the villagers, learning handicraft-making using recycled materials, jungle trekking in Bukit Matan and home-stay activities.

According to a statement, Sungai Matan has been attracting local and international visitors.

Last year, they had over 7000 international visitors from the ASEAN countries, Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan, Korea, USA, United Kingdom, Spain, France, Germany and more.

“The tourism (programme) is yet to be completed, as there will be more features, such as a cruise boat touring surrounding the area, more shopping booths and activities, which is hoped to be completed by December 2014.” the village chief said to The Brunei Times.

The project is in collaboration with the Tourism Development Department and is under the National Development plan of the Ministry of Development which was completed in last September, to develop the village economy through tourism.
