A TOTAL of 115 Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) graduates received their graduation certificates yesterday from His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, as chancellor of the university.

Held at the International Convention Centre in Berakas, the fourth Hafl al-Takharruj (convocation ceremony) for the first time produced two Bruneian doctorates, another milestone for UNISSA since its inception on January 1, 2007.

The achievement was a first for UNISSA since its inception on January 1, 2007.

Also present was His Royal Highness Prince (Dr) Hj Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, in his capacity as pro-chancellor of UNISSA.

Upon the royal entourage’s arrival, a Bentara (person who carries the regalia) entered the plenary hall of ICC, carrying a massive Al-Quran on his shoulders.

The event started with the singing of the national anthem, followed by the recital of Al-Quran by Mohammad Khairul Nazri Begawan Mudim Hj Sapar, Bachelor of Science in Islamic Finance graduand. A hadith was then read by Zulhilmi Rosman, Bachelor of Syariah (Fiqh and Judicial) graduand.

The translations of the Quranic verses and the hadith were read by Abd Malek Hj Sawal.

UNISSA Rector Dr Hj Norarfan Hj Zainal then delivered his welcoming remarks, followed by His Majesty who delivered his titah encouraging UNISSA to further expand its research capacity and to follow the exemplary role models of the two local doctorates.

The Takbir “Allahu Akhbar” then resonated three times around the hall, signaling that the time had come for the graduates to line up to receive their certificates.

The number of graduates is lesser this year compared to 148 recorded last year.

However, this year recorded an increase in doctorates and Master’s degree recipients – five doctorates and 24 Master’s compared to last year’s one doctorate and 20 Master’s graduands recorded.

To bless the ceremony, State Mufti Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia (Dr) Ustaz Hj Awg Abd Aziz Juned recited the Doa Selamat to conclude the event.

Speaking to The Brunei Times, one of the graduands, Norismahamalina Ismail said the quality of UNISSA graduates is comparable to those from other universities. However, UNISSA graduates possess an edge as they also studied courses in the religious field.

InsyaAllah, I want to embrace my career journey, I want to develop myself and my skills in accounting, finance and Islamic banking,” Norismahamalina said.

The Bachelor of Science in Islamic Finance graduate is currently working at PetroleumBRUNEI as a Finance Executive (Graduate Development Trainee).

Meanwhile, Noornabilah Jubli, a Syariah graduate talked about her experience during her study in UNISSA.

“UNISSA is strict in terms of its teaching quality, where the lecturers are especially chosen to teach Brunei students. We are all quality graduates. We all hoped to have the opportunity to serve His Majesty’s government or in the private sector,” she said.
