MCYS Minister seeks to document traditional Malay attire; revive local customs, heritage

MINISTER of Culture, Youth and Sports yesterday expressed the hope that the wearing of Bruneian headgear and sinjang (a short-sarong worn over the men’s traditional Malay attire) will be documented in the form of exhibitions at suitable galleries or in print.

“This is in line with the national aspiration to highlight and revive Brunei heritage so that they will not be neglected and lost over time,” said Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Seri Setia Hj Hazair Hj Abdullah in his speech during the final of the Making and Wearing of Dastar and Sinjang National Competition.

In addition to the effort to preserve and revive the local customs and the heritage of Brunei, YB Pehin Dato Hj Hazair called on the Art and Culture Section at the ministry to also focus on ways to introduce and promote the politeness and manners as well as behaviour of Bruneians during social ceremonies.

Held at the Airport Mall in Berakas, the contest, which is organised by the Culture and Arts Section, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, is a continuation of previous workshops and promotional events throughout the country over several years.

Hj Khairul Halimin Hj Abd Hamid emerged champion in the dastar making category for youth, while Hj Md Nor Syahmi Hj Suhaimi and Hj Muhd Ubaidah Hj Awang Damit came in second and third place, respectively.

 In the adult category, Irman Hifni won the first place, followed by Noriffendy Hj Abu Hassan and Md Najid Hj Mohamed as the second and third winner, respectively. Meanwhile, in the category of wearing of sinjang for youth, Hj Md Nor Syahmi Hj Suhaimi won the first place, followed by Md Marwan Hj Mat Noor at second place and Hj Muhd Ubaidah Hj Awang Damit at third place.

In the adult category, Siti Aishah Salleh won the first place, while Irman Hifni and Hj Mohd Najib Hj Bagul came at second and third respectively.The winner in each category bagged _home _a cash prize of $500, while the second and third place winners received $300 and $200, respectively.

In the contest, the overall winner in the compulsory dastar and dastar of the participant’s choice category was won by Irman Hifni, while Hj Md Nor Syahmi was announced as the overall winner in the creative dastar category.

 Siti Aishah won the overall winner in the compulsory sinjang and creative sinjang, while Hj Md Nor Syahmi won the overall winner in the sinjang of the participant’s choice category.
